I remember reading “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury as a child, and now reading it again as a college student I can appreciate the themes and messages more than I did as a child. This story was written in 1950, and it’s interesting to read about the technological advances that Bradbury wrote about. Whether he thought these advances would be real or not, it is still interesting to read about a family who is addicted to the technology in their lives, written years before real technology would become an everyday occurrence for most people. The Hadley family designed their house because they thought the extensive technology would make them happier. In reality, it is just doing everything for them and is preventing them from actually going and living their lives like humans are designed to do. We can still take that message away from this story 70 years later, and remember that technology can be a good thing, but too much of it can prevent you from actually being happy and fulfilled with your life.
